Gustavo Pérez Firmat was born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Miami, Florida. He holds a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Spanish, both from the University of Miami, and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Michigan. He has received numerous fellowships and awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship and a National Endowment for the Humanities senior fellowship.
